Welcome to Portela Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Thank You for visiting PortelaBJJ.com, the online home of Portela Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Aurora's best Martial Arts school! We pride ourselves on being the best Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy and Martial Arts academy in the South Denver metropolitan area. We are conveniently located on the southeast corner of the intersection of Parker Road and Orchard Road. We proudly serve the communities of South Denver, Centennial, Aurora, Greenwood Village and Parker. We are a Megaton Competition Team school and a proud member of the Wellington "Megaton" Dias affiliation.

Our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu programs are meant for everyone regardless of age, gender, size or fitness level. The basis of the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu martial art is to promote the concept of a smaller, weaker individual defending and/or submitting a bigger, stronger aggressor by using proper technique and leverage. By taking the fight to the ground, an individual can use positional control or apply a submission, such as choke holds or joint-locks, to subdue an assailant. As a combat sport, self-defense system or martial art, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has proven to be the most effective grappling and martial art, in the world.

At Portela BJJ, we offer world-class instruction in a safe, clean and supportive environment. Our emphasis is on teaching self-defense and martial arts while promoting fitness, self-confidence, weight-loss and improved health. Many of our students also become involved in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu due to the sporting and competition aspect of the art. With the explosion of Mixed Martial Arts, or MMA, many fans find themselves interested in learning the same techniques utilized by MMA professionals.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Black Belts in the UFC include BJ Penn, Jose Aldo, Anderson Silva, Georges St. Pierre, Vitor Belfort, Wanderlei Silva, Lyoto Machida, Shogun Rua and many, many more. Of course, the original Ultimate Fighting Championships were a showcase of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu superiority with Royce Gracie, backed by the Gracie family, winning UFCs 1, 2 and 4.

Having lived and trained in the Aurora, Colorado area, the staff at Portela BJJ believe that the Aurora area, including Centennial, Parker, Greenwood Village and surrounding areas, is the ideal area to teach and train Megaton Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Aurora is home to a number of traditional martial arts academies but few, if any, that focus solely on teaching and training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Being located on Parker Road in between I-225 and Arapahoe Road, Portela BJJ is ideally located to serve the communities of Aurora, Centennial, Parker and Greenwood Village and because we're located on near or on major highways and streets, we're easily accessible from anywhere in the Denver metropolitan area.

We understand that taking the first step towards enrolling in any martial arts or fitness program is overcoming your anxiety and picking up the phone. We're prepared to answer any and all of your questions and to reassure you that enrolling in one of our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu programs is the best thing you can do.

Please feel free to call us at any time at (720) 343-7255. If you have additional questions, please call our Aurora Centennial location and we'll respond as soon as possible. You're also welcome to drop in during one of scheduled classes and say, "Hello". We look forward to hearing from you soon!

Pan Jiu-JItsu 2014 Aurora Centennial BJJ

This weekend thousands of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitors, including many from Cetennial, Aurora and other parts of Colorado, will gather to compete in the 2014 Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championships, held in Irvine, CA. In this Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu coach's opinion, this is the finest martial arts competition of the year.

What's so great about the Pans? First, BJJ practitioners from all over the world gather to compete and put their technical abilities on display. The tournament invites competitors of all ages, genders and skill levels to compete. Children as young at 8, or younger, are welcome to compete on an international level at the Pans. Conversely, adults born on or before 1958 also have their own age and belt brackets. All totaled, there are 52 seperate divisions for competitors based on age and belt level. This does not include weight classes. Long, story short, if you're looking to test your skills against opponents of similar size, skill and age, this is where it happens. If you believe your martial arts skills are elite, you can compete in the absolute or open class divisions where belt rank and weight are not a consideration. Winning there divisions is solely based on skill and technical ability.

Because there are so many high-level grapplers in attendance to compete on an international stage, the Pans produces some of the greatest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu matches ever witnessed. It also helps that the Pans is broadcast live, online, in HD. You can watch almost every match from the comfort of your home or in your gym on a "smart" device. I know our team in Aurora and Centennial will be watching our martial arts brethren competing for Team Megaton Jiu-Jitsu this weekend. While watching, we're hoping to bare witness to some classic match-ups. My personal favorite is a 2013 match between Clark Gracie and Marcelo "Lapela" Mafra. Not sure why I enjoy it so much? Watch these BJJ champions battle it out for yourself....and watch til the very end!

If you've never experienced anything like what you just watched above, or if what you just watched peaks your interest in learning a martial art, specifically Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, come pay us a visit. We here to help develop a new wave of competitors from Aurora, Centennial, Parker and Greenwood Village so that someday you might be in a match like the one above.

As always, we hope to hear from you soon at (720) 343-7255
