This weekend thousands of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu competitors, including many from Cetennial, Aurora and other parts of Colorado, will gather to compete in the 2014 Pan Jiu-Jitsu Championships, held in Irvine, CA. In this Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu coach's opinion, this is the finest martial arts competition of the year.
What's so great about the Pans? First, BJJ practitioners from all over the world gather to compete and put their technical abilities on display. The tournament invites competitors of all ages, genders and skill levels to compete. Children as young at 8, or younger, are welcome to compete on an international level at the Pans. Conversely, adults born on or before 1958 also have their own age and belt brackets. All totaled, there are 52 seperate divisions for competitors based on age and belt level. This does not include weight classes. Long, story short, if you're looking to test your skills against opponents of similar size, skill and age, this is where it happens. If you believe your martial arts skills are elite, you can compete in the absolute or open class divisions where belt rank and weight are not a consideration. Winning there divisions is solely based on skill and technical ability.
Because there are so many high-level grapplers in attendance to compete on an international stage, the Pans produces some of the greatest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu matches ever witnessed. It also helps that the Pans is broadcast live, online, in HD. You can watch almost every match from the comfort of your home or in your gym on a "smart" device. I know our team in Aurora and Centennial will be watching our martial arts brethren competing for Team Megaton Jiu-Jitsu this weekend. While watching, we're hoping to bare witness to some classic match-ups. My personal favorite is a 2013 match between Clark Gracie and Marcelo "Lapela" Mafra. Not sure why I enjoy it so much? Watch these BJJ champions battle it out for yourself....and watch til the very end!
